Downsizing Made Easy

As we get older, most of us find that the big family house no longer suits our lifestyle. Too much space and too many possessions just mean more work maintaining everything, which can even cause stress. Whether you’re transitioning to a senior living apartment or moving into a smaller house, you can simplify your life by downsizing, and these helpful tips can make it a lot easier.

Give yourself plenty of time. There’s usually no reason to rush into downsizing. Going through all your possessions takes time, so if possible, allow yourself several months to get through the process. Just be sure that you work on it a little bit each day.

Start with the extra rooms. The kids’ old rooms, the guest rooms – these are places that you won’t have in a smaller home. Start here first, because you’ll need to eliminate everything or fit it in somewhere else so that it’ll fit in your new home.

Make firm decisions as you go. Make your decision about whether to keep or dispose of each item by donating, giving it to family or friends, or throwing away – and make this decision right away. Putting things in a “maybe” pile just makes it harder to get the job done.

Let emotions happen. As you go through all the items you’ve collected over the years, some will inevitably cause emotional memories. Allow yourself to feel these memories as you make decisions about keeping or giving away your items.

Make a photo album. If you’re giving away an item you’ve cherished, take a picture of it and keep that instead of the item. If you have collections that you simply won’t have room for in your new home, create a photo album that you’ll have regular access to so you can enjoy your items even if they aren’t physically present.

Get help. Downsizing can be quite a chore, especially if you have mobility issues or medical conditions. Don’t be afraid to ask a trusted friend or family member for help. You can even take this time to share stories and reminisce as you make decisions about your possessions.
