Indoor Activities for Seniors- Staying Active When the Weather Is Bad

Staying both physically and mentally active is important for everyone, but it’s especially important for seniors. This is pretty easy when the weather is nice and you can get outside, but it’s a little more challenging to keep your mind and body active when the weather takes a turn for the worse. Whether it’s too hot, too cold, or too stormy sometimes you end up stuck indoors for days on end. Here are some ideas of indoor activities that you can do to keep yourself busy despite being stuck inside.

Join an indoor fitness program. Physical activity promotes health, reduces depression, increases circulation, and improves strength and mobility. When you can’t get outside it can be difficult to stay physically active. Joining a group exercise class, aqua therapy, or even enlisting the services of our personal trainer will give you the opportunity and the motivation to keep moving.

Organize a game night with friends. Card games are fun, mentally stimulating and a great way to increase socialization. If you’re not a fan of cards, test your skills with a variety of board games. Make it a weekly game night, rain or shine, to help keep your mind sharp and strengthen friendships.

Attend concerts and shows. Be sure to check the facility event calendar often and take advantage of any concerts or shows offered. Music is incredibly stimulating for the brain, and it will do you good to get out and about rather than just being stuck in your home.

Take up a hobby. If you don’t already have a hobby that you enjoy, it’s time to take one up. Hobbies offer something productive to do and open up the opportunity for conversations with others that share your interests. If you already have a favorite hobby, consider offering a class for your friends to teach them all about it.

Hit the library. There is no better place to expand your mind than at the library. Grab some classics, try a new genre, or challenge yourself to learn something new. You might even consider joining or starting a weekly book club to discuss your current read with others.

Attend lectures. You will regularly find guest speakers listed on our events calendar giving lectures on various topics. This is another excellent opportunity to learn something new or expand your knowledge on a favorite topic.

Take an art class. Maybe you’ve always wanted to learn to paint or sculpt. Engaging in creative art activities is another way to help keep your mind sharp. Plus you’ll have something beautiful at the end to display in your home and bring you joy.

Attend worship services. Faith is an important part of many people’s lives. Gathering together to worship with fellow believers helps to strengthen that faith and renew your mind and spirit. Getting involved in a weekly Bible study will also give you the opportunity to interact with and discuss matters that are important to you with others.

Go shopping. Bad weather doesn’t mean you have to skip your daily walk. Just change the location where you are walking. Whether you’re buying anything or not, go on a shopping trip when the weather’s too bad to get outside. You’ll be able to get your daily steps in while in the AC in summer while staying warm in winter, and without getting wet when it’s raining.
